Common bacterial zoonoses

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease caused by Brucella bacteria that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It poses a significant threat to public health and animal production worldwide.

There are several types of Brucella bacteria that can cause brucellosis in humans, including B. melitensis (from sheep), B. abortus (from cattle), B. suis (from pigs), and B. canis (from dogs). Over 60 species of domestic and wild animals have been found to be infected with Brucella bacteria, making the bacteria an ubiquitous pathogen that can infect humans through contact with infected animals or their products.

Farmers, veterinarians, and other people who have close contact with livestock are at higher risk of acquiring brucellosis. Activities such as assisting with animal births, skinning or shearing animals, milking cows or goats, and slaughtering infected animals can increase the chance of infection if safety measures are not taken. Brucella bacteria can enter the human body through cuts or abrasions in the skin, mucous membranes, or the gastrointestinal tract.

One major challenge in preventing and controlling brucellosis is the high susceptibility of humans to the disease, especially for those who work in the livestock industry. People can develop symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, and headache if they become infected with the bacteria. In severe cases, the disease can lead to long-term complications such as arthritis, meningitis, and endocarditis.

To reduce the risk of contracting brucellosis, it is recommended to take several precautions when working with animals or consuming their products. For instance, separating raw and cooked meat and keeping different knives and cutting boards for each is strongly recommended. Food, particularly meat, should be cooked thoroughly before consumption. For farmers and veterinarians, wearing protective clothing such as gloves, masks, and goggles is also essential to prevent direct contact with infected animals and their products.

In conclusion, brucellosis is a serious disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Preventing and controlling the infection requires a joint effort from the government, farmers, veterinarians, and the general public. It is important to raise awareness of the risk factors and guidelines to prevent the disease.
